Strength training and anaerobic training are not necessarily two completely separate workouts. They can be programmed consecutively within the same workout session, especially when the goal is to improve strength, muscle development, power, conditioning, and overall performance. You can exercise regularly.
You can sweat.
You can spend 45 minutes or even an hour at the gym.
You can leave feeling completely exhausted.
And yet, months later, you may still be asking yourself:
“Why am I not getting the results I expected?”
This is one of the most frustrating things about fitness.
People often believe that working harder automatically means getting better results.
But exercise doesn’t work that way.
The body responds not simply to how tired you become, but to the type, order, intensity, and progression of the training stimulus you give it.
And one concept that many people completely overlook is the relationship between strength training and anaerobic training.
Strength training and anaerobic training are not the same thing
Strength training generally focuses on producing high levels of force against resistance.

Then they jump on the bike.

Then they do jumping exercises.
Then they finish with some light dumbbell exercises.
They’re exhausted.
They feel like they had a fantastic workout.
But if their primary goal was to become stronger and build muscle, they may have spent too much of their limited energy on conditioning before giving their muscles the high-quality resistance work they actually needed.
This is where exercise sequencing becomes important.
Your strongest work usually deserves your freshest energy.
If your main goal is strength or muscle development, you generally want your most demanding resistance exercises early in the session, when fatigue is relatively low.
After that, you can introduce appropriately selected anaerobic or conditioning work.
In simple terms:
Warm-up → Strength/Resistance Training → Anaerobic Conditioning → Cool-down
That doesn’t mean this sequence is mandatory for everyone.
It means that the priority should match the goal.
If strength is your priority, don’t destroy your energy with intense conditioning before you attempt your heaviest resistance exercises.
Think of your workout like building a house
Imagine you’re building a house.
The foundation comes first.
You don’t spend all your time decorating the living room and then discover you forgot to build the foundation.
Your workout can work the same way.
Strength can provide the foundation.
Once you’ve completed your important resistance work, you can add the conditioning component.

You aren’t choosing between strength and conditioning.
You’re learning how to combine them intelligently.
Why doing everything randomly can hold you back
Another common problem is changing exercises constantly.
One day it’s heavy weights.
The next day it’s HIIT.
Then it’s a long cardio session.
Then it’s a random collection of machines.
Then it’s 100 repetitions of something because it “burns.”
The person may be working extremely hard.
But there may be no clear progression.
And without progression, the body has less reason to continue adapting.

More exhaustion does not always mean more progress

You can finish a workout drenched in sweat and barely able to walk.
That doesn’t automatically mean you stimulated more muscle growth.
It doesn’t automatically mean you became stronger.
And it doesn’t automatically mean you burned enough fat to change your body composition.
A good workout should create an appropriate stimulus that your body can recover from and adapt to.
The goal isn’t simply to survive the workout.
The goal is to become better because of it.
A better way to structure the session
For a person whose primary goal is strength, muscle, and improved conditioning, a practical session might look something like this:
1. Warm-up
5-10 minutes of easy movement and dynamic mobility.
2. Strength training
Focus on major resistance exercises.
For example:
Squat → Row → Chest Press → Hip Hinge → Shoulder Press
The exact exercises, sets, repetitions, and loads should be adjusted to the individual.
3. Anaerobic conditioning
After the major strength work, add a short conditioning component.
For example:
20 seconds of hard effort
40 seconds of recovery
Repeat several times.
This could be performed on a bike, with a bodyweight movement, sled, rowing machine, or another appropriate exercise.
4. Cool-down
Finish with easier movement and recovery work.
The entire session doesn’t need to be brutally intense.
But there’s an important exception
If your primary goal is anaerobic power or explosive performance, the order can change.
You may want your explosive or power work earlier, while you’re fresh.
For example, an athlete who needs maximal sprinting or jumping performance shouldn’t necessarily perform a long strength workout first and then expect peak power afterward.
This is why there is no single “perfect workout order” for everybody.
The goal determines the priority.
What about fat loss?
This is where people often get confused.
They think:
“I’m trying to lose fat, so I should do as much cardio and high-intensity training as possible.”
Not necessarily.
A well-designed resistance program can help preserve or build muscle while you’re losing weight.
Adding conditioning can improve cardiovascular fitness and increase overall energy expenditure.
But the bigger picture still matters:
training + nutrition + recovery + consistency.
You don’t need to destroy yourself every day.
You need a plan you can actually follow.
What about older adults?
This becomes even more important as we get older.
The goal shouldn’t simply be to make someone sweat.
We want to preserve strength, muscle, balance, coordination, mobility, and the ability to perform everyday activities.
For many older adults, resistance training can be a foundation, while carefully selected conditioning work can be added according to their fitness level and medical considerations.
That could mean something as simple as:
Strength → short conditioning → mobility
rather than an exhausting boot-camp-style workout.

The real secret isn’t doing more
It’s understanding why you’re doing each part of the workout.
Strength training gives you a reason to progressively challenge your muscles.

Mobility helps you move well.
Recovery allows your body to adapt.
Nutrition provides the building blocks.
And consistency gives the entire process enough time to work.
When these pieces are randomly thrown together, people often work very hard without moving efficiently toward their goal.
When they’re organized intelligently, the same 45-60 minutes can become much more productive.
Stop measuring your workout by how exhausted you are
The next time you finish a workout, don’t only ask:
“How tired am I?”
Ask:
“Did I train the quality I actually wanted to improve?”
Did you get stronger?
Did you challenge your muscles appropriately?
Did you improve your ability to produce repeated high-intensity efforts?
Did you progress from last week?
Did you recover well enough to train again?
Those are much better questions.
Because fitness isn’t about making every workout feel like punishment.
It’s about giving your body the right stimulus, in the right order, at the right dose, and repeating it consistently enough for your body to adapt.
That’s where real results begin.
